Seniors At Risk - Why Me? Why Now?
Seniors who never had a problem with gambling in the past (although they may have gambled for recreation) are vulnerable to become Escape Compulsive Gamblers. They differ from the life time Action Gambler who, as a senior, may be at the end of a miserable lifetime of addiction. What makes these seniors vulnerable?
ACCEPTABILITY: It was once socially unacceptable for women in particular to go to gambling establishments by themselves. Today, many senior centers and even church groups arrange outings for seniors to the local casino. Churches have benefit casino nights and bingo nights. And of course, its almost your duty to play the lottery and help your state! The stigma is gone. Seniors, like most of the population, are now invited to gamble.
LACK OF EDUCATION ABOUT GAMBLING ADDICTION: "I considered gambling risk free. My father was an alcoholic so I made the decision early in life not to drink. I just didnt know how addictive gambling could be until it was too late." anonymous 67 year old woman in recovery from gambling addiction.
LIFE FACTORS SET SENIORS UP FOR COMPULSIVE ESCAPE GAMBLING: For those with certain predisposing factor which individuals attempt to self medicate for, the casino machines in particular create an anesthetizing quality that temporarily releases them from emotional and even physical pain. Some seniors face plenty of emotional pain: loss of a spouse, boredom, loneliness, chronic pain, geographic relocation, retirement, loss of identity, fear of death, dwindling finances, problems with children/grandchildren, and chronic pain.
