86,000 Arizona adults are Problem Gamblers. Another 400,000 are at risk of becoming Problem Gamblers. (Gemini Research March 21, 2003)
Those 86,000 Problem Gamblers have a negative social and economic impact on over 850,000 other Arizonans.
1600 problem gamblers called the Arizona Council for help
last year, most were broke, they had gambled away all of their money
on sports betting, lottery tickets, Internet gambling, casino, horse
or dog races, or other forms of gambling.
Most were in serious debt and hopeless. Many were thinking about
suicide. They didn't have money for rent, to pay their mortgage,
or to buy food for their children. Most had huge credit card debt.
Many had a number of payday loans due, some had lost their cars
and exhausted every possible loan option. Many did not have insurance
and, for those who did, most insurance providers would not pay for
treatment for problem gambling.
