MALE GAMBLERS

MALE GAMBLERS

Approximately 50% of all calls for help to the Arizona Council Helpline are from or about men with serious gambling problems. Of those, Approximately 60% meet the criteria for Action compulsive gambling; 40% or thereabout meet criteria for Escape compulsive gambling.

We urge you to Click on "Types of Gamblers" in the TOP menu to see what most accurately describes your experience or observation. This determination can greatly accelerate the recovery of the gambler by allowing a better understanding of the disease.

Gender or Type ?

The first signs that there was a different type of gambler asking for help was when women began in increasing numbers to walk into the previously male dominated Gamblers Anonymous rooms. This difference was misinterpreted to be a gender issue. Men gambled one way; women another. Even our council literature reflected that misconception in the early editions of our continuously revised article, Different Types of Gamblers.

We now know that this is NOT a gender issue (although women do seem to do better in early recovery by attending women only meeting). The accessibility of casino type gambling is affecting men who had no previous history of gambling or compulsive gambling in the same way it affects women.

The Action gambler may begin to gamble for Escape during the latter stages of the disease. That does not mean he now meets the criteria of the Escape or gambler. The profile is still that of the Action gambler and recovery and/or treatment should be planned using the Action gambler criteria.

Compulsive gambling is a diagnosable & treatable disease, not a disgrace.
